Every Muslim knows the Quran is the word of Allah. But fewer pause to reflect on the extraordinary moment it first arrived — the night a single word from the Divine shook a man in a cave and set the course of human history.

What Does "Nuzul Quran" Mean?
The word nuzul (نُزُول) comes from the Arabic root n-z-l, meaning "to descend" or "to come down." Nuzul Quran literally means the descent of the Quran — referring to Allah's act of sending the Quran down from the highest heaven to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
In Islamic tradition, the Quran is the literal, uncreated speech of Allah. It did not originate with a human being. It descended. This is not metaphor — it is the foundational claim of Islam, stated plainly in the Quran itself.
The First Revelation: Surah Al-Alaq
The year was approximately 610 CE. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, then 40 years old, was in retreat in the Cave of Hira on the mountain of Jabal al-Nour near Mecca. He had gone there, as was his habit, to reflect in solitude.
The angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared and commanded:
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
Iqra' bismi rabbika alladhi khalaq
"Read in the name of your Lord who created." — Quran 96:1 (Al-Alaq)
These were the first words of the Quran ever revealed. The Prophet ﷺ, who had never been taught to read, said: "I am not a reader." Jibreel embraced him and repeated the command — three times — until the words settled in his heart.
He descended from the mountain trembling, went to his wife Khadijah رضي الله عنها, and said: "Cover me, cover me." The first quran surah had begun.
How Was the Quran Revealed? 23 Years of Ayat
The al Quran was not revealed all at once. This is one of its most remarkable features. Allah explains directly in the Quran why:
وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الْقُرْآنُ جُمْلَةً وَاحِدَةً ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ لِنُثَبِّتَ بِهِ فُؤَادَكَ
"Those who disbelieve say: Why was the Quran not revealed to him all at once? Thus [it was revealed] that We might strengthen your heart thereby..." — Quran 25:32 (Al-Furqan)
The full the Quran — 114 surahs, 6,236 ayahs — descended over approximately 23 years, from the first revelation in 610 CE until the final ayahs shortly before the Prophet's ﷺ death in 632 CE.
Revelations came in response to events, questions, and spiritual needs of the community. Some quran surah were revealed entirely in one sitting; others were assembled over years, ayah by ayah, as Allah instructed.

Though the Quran descended over 23 years, Islamic tradition holds that it was first sent down from the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) to the lowest heaven on a single blessed night — Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree.

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
"Indeed, We sent it [the Quran] down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months."
— Quran 97:1–3 (Al-Qadr)

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالْفُرْقَانِ
"The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran — a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion [between right and wrong]."

The Quran Meaning: What Does "Quran" Actually Mean?
