Reading the whole Quran takes about 30 hours for a fluent reader reciting at a steady pace. That works out to roughly 3 minutes per page across the 604 pages of a standard mushaf, or about an hour per juz.
How long it takes you depends on two things: how fast you read, and how many minutes a day you give it. Both are below.
How long the whole Quran takes, by reading speed
| Reader | Time per page | Whole Quran |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, fluent (reading silently or quickly) | ~2 min | ~20 hours |
| Fluent, steady recitation | ~3 min | ~30 hours |
| Learner, still sounding out words | 5+ min | 50+ hours |
These are estimates, not rules. A page of long ayahs takes longer than a page of short ones, and tajweed at a slow, measured pace (tartil) takes longer again. Full audio recitations by well-known reciters in the murattal style also run to roughly 20–35 hours, depending on the reciter.
How many days it takes, by minutes per day
Most people don't read for 30 hours straight. What matters is the daily amount. At about 3 minutes per page:
| Minutes per day | Pages per day | Finish in |
|---|---|---|
| 5 minutes | ~1.7 | ~1 year |
| 15 minutes | 5 | ~4 months |
| 30 minutes | 10 | ~2 months |
| 1 hour | 20 (1 juz) | 30 days |
| 2 hours | 40 (2 juz) | 15 days |
So a Ramadan khatm costs about an hour a day, and a yearly khatm costs about five minutes. For your own target, the khatam calculator gives the exact pages per day and your finish date.
How long popular surahs take
At a steady recitation pace:
| Surah | Verses | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Mulk | 30 | ~9 minutes |
| Ar-Rahman | 78 | ~9 minutes |
| Al-Waqiah | 96 | ~10 minutes |
| Yaseen | 83 | ~19 minutes |
| Al-Kahf | 110 | ~40 minutes |
| Al-Baqarah | 286 | ~2.5 hours |
Al-Mulk before sleep is less than ten minutes a night. Al-Kahf on Friday is closer to forty, which is why many people split it across Thursday night and Friday.
The real limit is consistency, not time
Five minutes a day finishes the Quran in a year. Almost everyone has five minutes; what most people lack is a cue that makes those five minutes happen every day. The Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464).
Some ways to make the minutes happen:
- Pick a fixed slot, such as after Fajr or before sleep, and attach the reading to it. Our guide to building a daily Quran reading habit covers this step by step.
- Choose a plan with an end date, like the one-year khatm plan or the 30-day Ramadan plan.
- Put the Quran before your apps. Quran Gate blocks Instagram, TikTok or YouTube until you have read a few verses, and remembers your place, so the time you would spend scrolling moves your khatm forward a page at a time.
